About TerraNova History
TerraNova is the name for the organisation previously known as the Recovered Materials Foundation. The Recovered Materials Foundation was a not-for-profit organisation established by the Christchurch City Council and other interested parties in 1997. Its aim was to develop sustainable end uses for materials recovered from the wastestream.
As part of an integrated waste minimisation strategy CCC implemented a kerbside recycling collection in the late 1990s. Stable, sustainable markets for recovered materials were central to the success of this programme. Amongst other things, TerraNova was responsible until August 2009 for finding markets for materials collected at kerbside. This marketing and procesing work was undertaken by Meta NZ (a charitable company established by TerraNova in 2005). From August 2009 this work is being done by CCCTwo (part of Christchurch City Council).
TerraNova re-focussed its role in 2005 to an organisation offering waste education and waste exchange services. TerraNova is also involved in lobbying for and advising on issues related to waste minimisaiton.
TerraNova's waste exchange and education activities were transferred to Christchurch City Council at the end of November 2009. The Trust will be wound up in May 2010. |
