Training Course Nets a Great Resource
A listing in an edition of the Recycling Works newspaper caught the eye of Rob MacGregor from Seafood Training Services in Christchurch. The listing was for old fishing nets of various sizes (weighing up to two and half tonnes each!), and Rob decided that these would be ideal for training students how to repair nets. |

Seafood Training Services runs a 24 week course for 12-16 students covering all aspects of the fishing industry. This and other Seafood Training Services courses are funded by Work and Income NZ for youth and adults who are registered with them. The course has an impressive 95% placement rate into jobs with the inshore and offshore fishing industry, as well as the sea-based and land-based processing industry. Having access to these old nets has been a great advantage for Rob and his students. Thanks to Waste Exchange they now have access to an ongoing supply with which to help more people into work in the fishing industry. |
